Dok Hi Kim
Dok Hi Kim is a South Korean contemporary artist whose meditative abstract practice explores the quiet poetry of nature, atmosphere, and emotional stillness. Born in South Korea, Kim completed her Bachelor’s in Applied Art at Sung Kyun Kwan University in Seoul before relocating to Melbourne, Australia, where she pursued a further BA in Fine Arts. This dual foundation, one rooted in Eastern philosophical aesthetics and the other in Western contemporary art — forms the basis of her distinctive visual language. Working primarily in oils, Kim creates atmospheric compositions defined by subtle tonal shifts, layered textures, and an almost spiritual sense of calm. Her paintings do not depict landscapes in a literal sense; instead, they evoke environments through sensation, the softness of dawn light, the quiet weight of mist, the resonance of open space. Each canvas is a contemplative field where colour and breath seem to merge, inviting the viewer into a moment of introspection. Kim’s work has been exhibited internationally and collected by major institutions, including the Australian National Museum and Moscow’s International Design School. Her paintings have been presented at the Moscow International Art Fair and sold through respected auction houses in London and Paris, solidifying her position as an artist whose cross-cultural perspective resonates globally. Her practice has evolved across decades of international exhibition activity, including notable solo shows such as Recent Works (Lindell Fine Art, Melbourne, 2007), Tranquillity (Wetterling Teo Gallery, Singapore, 2003), ART 2000 Contemporain (Espace Auteil, Paris, 2002), Emerging Light (Gallery Savina, Seoul, 1996), and Autumn Lights (International House Gallery, Osaka, 1993). Through her meditative approach to abstraction, Kim continues to explore the quiet spaces between perception and emotion, offering art that serves as both sanctuary and reflection, a meeting point between the inner world and the natural one.
