In Ocean Floor, I was interested in the idea of what remains; the traces and imprints left behind as the ocean continually reshapes its seabed. The work draws inspiration from coral formations that act as both habitat and history, marking time through cycles of growth, erosion, and loss. After witnessing coral bleaching firsthand in Sri Lanka, I wanted to reflect on how rising temperatures strip reefs of their colour and vitality, leaving ghostly remnants of once-living structures. Built through layers of oil and natural materials, the surface has settled organically, much like coral over time.
